Alyssa Bertini
ALYSSA BERTINI
  • Title: Operations Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Major: Political Science
  • Why Rising for Justice? Alyssa is interested in going to law school and wanted to gain hands on legal experience by interacting with attorneys and law students. She also wanted to learn about different areas of law that she may want to practice and wondered if public interest law was right for her. Alyssa loves the mission of Rising for Justice and desired to play a role in helping people obtain legal representation.
  • On the spring to-do list: Go to as many coffee shops as possible and spend time outside exploring the National Mall.
  • Fun fact: Moving to start her internship experience was the first time Alyssa had ever been to DC, and she is loving DC so far!

  • Why Rising for Justice?: Natalie chose Rising for Justice because she wanted to gain legal experience while working in an environment geared towards helping other people.
  • On the spring to-do list: Visit as many museums as possible
  • Fun fact: “I have traveled to Europe for two weeks and studied the politics and governments of specific European countries.”

Ashley Duke
ASHLEY DUKE

  • University: University of California, Santa Barbara
  • Major: Political Science
  • Why Rising for Justice? Ashley is passionate about the intersection of law and social justice. From the start of high school, she knew she wanted to practice law and become an attorney. During college, she was introduced to different courses regarding social justice, and from there decided her true goal following law school would be to fight injustices present in society today. Rising for Justice fits perfectly within this mold, so she knew it would be the right place to be.
  • On the spring to-do list: Tour the White House and visit every museum in the National Mall.
  • Fun fact: Ashley knows how to surf, but she isn’t the best at it.

Maddy Hopkins
MADDY HOPKINS
  • Title: Operations Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
  • Majors: Psychology, Communication
  • Why Rising for Justice? Maddy wants to gain a better understanding of how a successful non-profit functions and insight on how to become a part of such a great organization. 
  • On the spring to-do list: Visit every Smithsonian and coffee shop in DC!
  • Fun fact: Maddy is an amateur vegan chef.

Hayley Margolis
HAYLEY MARGOLIS
  • Title: Graphic Design and Social Media Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: George Washington University
  • Major: Sociology
  • Why Rising for Justice? Hayley is passionate about using her skills in digital communications to uplift and advance progressive organizations that advocate for equitable access to justice. She is inspired by the significant impact Rising for Justice’s grassroots advocacy achieves when it comes to addressing systemic inequity in DC.
  • On the spring to-do list: Design and schedule a March social media plan for National Social Work Month, highlight the incredible work our social work team does to provide wrap around support to our clients.
  • Fun fact: Hayley has lived in four countries!

Lauren Parker
LAUREN PARKER
  • Title: Legal Immigration Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: North Carolina Central University School of Law
  • Major: Law
  • Why Rising for Justice? Lauren always wanted to work with a nonprofit organization that provides legal assistance to those that need it most. No matter what Lauren does, the goal is to provide service that is meaningful and impactful.
  • On the spring to-do list: Lauren does a lot of hiking on the weekends and is hoping to take a weekend trip to a few more national parks this spring.
  • Fun fact: Goats and turtles are Lauren’s favorite animals and they are very special to her!

Adriana Perez
ADRIANA PEREZ
  • Title: Immigration Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: American University
  • Major: Legal Studies
  • Why Rising for Justice? Adriana wants to make an impact and be a voice for underrepresented voices. Adriana hopes to use jer work experience at Rising for Justice to ignite a spark in granting justice to those who have been traditionally ignored by the legal system. 
  • On the spring to-do list: Enter the Washington Monument, Have a picnic at the lincoln memorial and finally try DC famous crab fries!
  • Fun fact: Adirana can cook the best lasagna.

CLEVELAND, OH

Andrew Phillippi
ANDREW PHILLIPPI
  • Title: Operations Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: Mount St. Mary’s University
  • Majors: Philosophy
  • Why Rising for Justice? Considering going to law school, Drew wanted an internship that provided experience in the legal field while also fulfilling a necessary service to the public as a whole. At the end of the day, improving society is what is most important.
  • On the spring to-do list: Visit the Cherry Blossom Festival, go to a few concerts, and visit local law schools.
  • Fun fact: “I am a trained vocalist. I have performed in many concerts and last Spring had the opportunity to perform in my first opera!”

EAST BERLIN, PA

Hannah Wilk
HANNAH WILK
  • Title: Operations Intern
  • Semester: Spring 2020
  • University: Roanoke College
  • Major: Criminal Justice
  • Why Rising for Justice? Hannah has always been interested in pursuing a career in law, but has never had exposure to the type of work done at Rising for Justice. This past fall, Hannah was part of the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program which inspired her to seek out opportunities relating to social justice.
  • On the spring to-do list: Attend a service at the National Cathedral
  • Fun fact: Hannah travelled to Greece and ran in the first Olympic Stadium.
